According to a January 19, 2021 Radio Dabanga article (Radio Dabanga is a Darfuri-run independent news organization), the attack has left at least 129 people dead, with that number expected to rise as more bodies are recovered from El Geneina, the Kerending camps and the surrounding areas (1). The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is also quickly evaluating the situation (2).
Misterei, close to El Geneina, was attacked on July 25, 2020, and the Kerending Camps were attacked in late December, 2019; both attacks displaced many thousands of people. In June 2020, DOHS distributed blankets and sleeping mats to over 750 people displaced by the last attack on the Kerending Camps.
